Chapter 7
Anders
"C opper Cross takes Christmas a little too seriously," I groan as we enter town. My quiet neighborhood changes to a holiday wonderland in a matter of moments.
Maisie's eyes are wide with delight. "Look at this place!" She exclaims.
"I would swear this is the north pole."
Every lamp post is festooned with garland. Every tree that sits out in front of someone's store is covered in Christmas lights and ornaments.
Snow litters the ground, reflecting back the colors of the lights. The town's sound system has been rigged to play Christmas music on replay. "I guess I'm the town Grinch, then," I joke. It's kind of the truth, this year anyway.
I pull into the grocery store parking lot and Maisie is quick to jump out of the truck. My sister didn't leave any heavy jackets around when she left, so Maisie is trying to survive in the one she brought with her. I don't bother to ask if she's cold. From her chattering teeth, I can see that she's freezing.
"This place is beautiful. I never knew Copper Cross existed," she gushes.
I urge her toward the door. If we're inside, she can't freeze to death on my watch. "It's a hidden gem, alright." The Black Pine Woods is full of little towns like this. Homes are spread out across the mountain. Some people have to drive thirty miles to the nearest grocery store. I'm lucky that my parents picked a place just a mile away. "When I was growing up, when the weather was nice, I used to walk into town to hang out at the little movie theater. It only seated about fifty people, but every Friday night it was packed."
Maisie shudders as we enter the grocery store, the warmth from the heaters nearly a shock to her system. "Is it true what they say about small town life?"
"Where everybody knows everything about you?" I ask with a grin as I grab a cart. "Or how people find out that you're single before you do? How someone is always trying to set you up with this nice girl at church?" I was fifteen the first time that one happened. "It's very true. Especially here in Copper Cross where we only have a few thousand people. What else is there to do but go hunting, fishing, or to the diner to gossip?"
She whips out her phone and starts swiping across the screen. We hit the produce section first and she rattles off a list of items she needs from the list on her phone. She grabs some, I grab some, and we meet in the middle. "It was kind of like that back home, but it was more like the same people always knew what was going on in your life. Not everybody, but a select few. It was nice to feel like you had a second support system, even if they occasionally helped rumors spread further and wider than you would have liked."
Everyone in Copper Cross, whether they gossiped or not, is like family.
